Chances are if you are from Grand Rapids, you have had your fair share of quality craft beer. And if you haven’t, what the heck have you been doing for the last several years?! Come out from under that rock and join the rest of us basking in the delicious fruits of Beer City USA
Grand Rapids was among the trail-blazing cities that set the tone for the rest of the country as craft beer made its way into our hipster hearts. Nowadays, craft beer is as common a term as Budweiser was to our founding fathers (beer fathers that is.) Just about every major or medium-sized city across this great nation is serving up some sort of uniquely-inspired brews. However, as with any commodity, there is always that rare, most elusive, most coveted item that everyone wants, but only a few can have. That was the inspiration for the new reality TV show “Modern Ahabs.” A show dedicated to the hunt for the world’s most elusive craft beer.
Now, for those of you who have been living under that rock, let me back up a little. You may be familiar with Herman Melville’s classic novel, Moby Dick, in which a fisherman (Captain Ahab) becomes obsessed with finding and killing the giant white whale (Moby Dick) that took his leg years before. In the world of craft beer, a “whale” is a term used to describe an extremely rare limited-release beer that enthusiasts pursue like Captain Ahab’s hunt for Moby Dick. Each beer experienced is another notch in their belt, a sort of right-of-passage in beer culture. People will come from all over the country and wait in lines that wind their way through several city-blocks just for a taste. Sound crazy? Well so did a Pokemon comeback, but here we are.
Modern Ahab’s Pilot episode will feature one of the rarest, most sought after beers in the country, Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS), by Founder’s Brewing Co. The show’s writer and producer, Jason Ley, will take viewers on an insider’s journey through all of the hype and insanity that ensues during KBS-week in Grand Rapids, MI.
It's rather fitting that the episode will be premiering in the heart of Beer City, USA at Wealthy St. Theater on Thursday, July 21st, 2016. Doors open at 7pm and there will be a surprise episode-themed Founder’s beer on tap! The event itself is free and open to the general public- that includes you, rock dwellers!
If you like beer, or just have a crazy case of FOMO, you will not want to miss this event!
