Grand Rapids has a long history of brewing great beer and continues to hold the coveted title of "Beer City USA." We take our beer seriously in GR, so you know these breweries are the real deal! Here is a list of the 11 best breweries (in our opinion) in Grand Rapids.
Founders Brewing Company:
The epicenter of Beer City, USA, Founders could quite possibly be what put Grand Rapids on the map for many devout beer connoisseurs. Ranked as one of the top breweries in the world by Ratebeer.com for 5 consecutive years, Founders is passionate about making beer that pushes the limit. We go on, but you should probably just take our word for it on this one.
Our Favorite Beer: Backwoods Bastard
Ever secretly wished you could have a beer in church? Now you can! Located at 925 Cherry Street, this church-turned-brewery is a local favorite. Once inside you may feel like you walked onto the set of Lord of the Rings, with its Shire-like feel and large wooden communal tables. Brewery Vivant has a tremendous food selection to pair with each of their expertly crafted beers. If you are a true beer lover, bring your stein or boot to Stein Night on Mondays for fills starting at $5.
Our Favorite Beer: Tripel
Mitten Brewing Co:
Mitten Brewing Company is stationed in historic Engine House No. 9 just north of downtown. From the memorabilia on the wall, to the original Tiger stadium seats in the lobby, this place drips with Michigan pride! To save you from the agony of choosing between one of their mouth watering pizzas and hand crafted beers, we suggest going on a Monday during their “flight-night” special: $19.99 for pizza flights and only $5 for an accompanying beer flight. Oh and the beer flight comes in a wooden mitten, so that’s neat.
Our Favorite Beer: Triple Crown Brown
Grand Rapids Brewing Co:
Established in 1893, GRBC was brewing before it was cool. A culmination of six original Grand Rapids breweries came together to form Grand Rapids Breweing Co. which now, 119 years later, has reemerged in it’s birthplace of downtown Grand Rapids. And if that’s not cool enough for you, they are also the first USDA Certified organic breweries in Michigan, and almost all the materials that make up the place are locally sourced and re-purposed to give you the feel of historic GR. And did we mention their beer? Because it is really good.
Our Favorite Beer: Brewer’s Heritage
Perrin Brewing Company:
Located in Comstock Park, just northwest of downtown, Perrin Brewing Company is all about fresh, local, craft beer. In fact, before you even walk through the doors, you will pass by fresh hops growing outside of the building. At Perrin, Budweiser is basically a curse word, since they put their heart and soul into making each beer as unique as the people they serve.
Our Favorite Beer: Perrin Black
Hideout Brewing Co:
Tucked away on the Northwest side, near Plainfield and I-96, is one of Grand Rapids’ best-kept secrets: Hideout Brewing Co. Once a homebrew kitchen where homebrewing enthusiasts could gather and brew their own beer as well as share recipes and tips with other homebrewers, Hideout Brewing Co. is without a doubt a must. With well over one hundred different beers, ciders, and meads to choose from, you are sure to find the right beer for your buds. This is also probably the only place in town that offers a 25-quantity beer sampler!
Our Favorite Beer: Smuggler’s Hazelnut Stout
Harmony Brewing Co:
Don’t let the size fool you, Harmony Brewing Co. is making a big impression in the Eastown community. This quaint microbrewery was founded on the desire to be a place of gathering and great beer. Unlike some of the larger breweries in GR, Harmony purposefully keeps their distribution quantities down in order to stay in tune with the changing seasons and ever evolving art of craft beer.
Our Favorite Beer: Fiddle Stix IPA
B.O.B.’s House of Brews:
Located downtown in the “Big Old Building,” this is a brewery that we think deserves two “big old” thumbs up. Within the B.O.B you will find live music, dancing, delicious restaurants, a comedy club, and B.O.B.’s House of Brews. This is the one stop shop for those of us whose bar-crawl days are long gone. Brew master John Svoboda has been brewing beer for 28 years and is passionate about his profession. Become a lifetime member of their mug club for only $25.
Our Favorite Beer: Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter
As hip as it’s name, Elk Brewing Co. is situated right next to some of our favorite restaurants in East Hills, and is a great little place to hit up on a night out. They have an excellent patio during the summer where you can try your hand at corn hole, or pick from one of their many board games inside! They don't have a kitchen, but with a plethora of delicious surrounding restaurants, feel free to order some take-out to take-in!
Favorite Beer: Scotch Ale
Rockford Brewing Company:
Located in the heart of downtown Rockford, this brewery is not one to be missed. Although it is a little drive, it is well worth the trip. Situated alongside the beautiful Rogue River, Rockford Brewing Co. takes their inspiration from places such as Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, and right here in Michigan. They are also dedicated to local seasonal ingredients, keeping their beer current and fresh!
Favorite Beer: Hoplust IPA
Beer. Music. Pizza. Shall we go on? This Grandville brewery may have only opened its doors a year ago, but they are already a local favorite. Named after the original Osgood Tavern, opened in the 1830’s, Osgood Brewing captures the rich history of Grandville, while contributing to it’s promising future by creating a place where people can gather and enjoy great one-of-a-kind beer. Now open for lunch by popular demand.
